large round mug: blue birds, tree, a house, vase

52.00

A big round handled cup, large enough for a large cup of tea or coffee or maybe soup or ice cream...This one holds about 14 ounces.

This cup is painted in colors  with a blue bird on a tree, a house, and a bird perched on a vase. The inside is a a pale celadon blue.  The outside is polished unglazed porcelain, sanded to feel smooth--something like a weathered beach stone.

I throw these mugs on the potters wheel and pull the handles. Then  I paint the outside with underglazes and etch/carve/scratch through with a variety of tools to add the details (this is called sgraffito). After a first (bisque) firing,  the mug is glazed inside with a colored glaze and fired again. After the glaze firing, I  sand and polish the outside to create a smooth surface which feels good in the hands.

You may wash them by hand or in the dishwasher.  If you drink a lot of tea, like I do, the inside will stain over time--but this is easily removed with an abrasive scrubbing (I use those dark green scouring pads commonly found in the grocery store--we call them "green scrubbies").
