large mug: birds in vines + vases+ house - celadon inside

52.00

A tall large cup, big  enough for a large cup of tea or coffee. It holds about  16 ounces.

This cup is painted with birds in vines, vases, and a house.

The inside is a pale celadon blue, and the exterior is unglazed, polished porcelain. It feels a bit like a weathered stone--the porcelain is vitrified (sealed)  and it will not stain.

I throw these mugs on the potters wheel and pull the handles. Then  I paint the outside with underglazes and etch/carve/scratch through with a variety of tools to add the details (this is called sgraffito). After a first (bisque) firing,  the mug is glazed inside with a colored glaze and fired again. After the glaze firing, I  sand and polish the outside to create a smooth surface which feels good in the hands.

You may wash them by hand or in the dishwasher.  If you drink a lot of tea, like I do, the inside will stain over time--but this is easily removed with an abrasive scrubbing (I use those dark green scouring pads commonly found in the grocery store--we call them "green scrubbies").
