small handled mug: owl + bird + vase + tree

52.00

A small cup, for people who’ve asked me to add smaller cups to my line.

This cup is painted in black and white and greys with an owl and other birds and an owl on the bottom. The inside is a soft grey and the exterior is unglazed, polished porcelain. It feels a bit like a weathered stone--the porcelain is vitrified (sealed)  and it will not stain.

I throw these mugs on the potters wheel and pull the handles. Then  I paint the outside with underglazes and etch/carve/scratch through with a variety of tools to add the details (this is called sgraffito). After a first (bisque) firing,  the mug is glazed inside with a colored glaze and fired again. After the glaze firing, I  sand and polish the outside to create a smooth surface which feels good in the hands.

You may wash them by hand or in the dishwasher.  If you drink a lot of tea, like I do, the inside will stain over time--but this is easily removed with an abrasive scrubbing (I use those dark green scouring pads commonly found in the grocery store--we call them "green scrubbies").
