medium mug: roman bird and olive branch

44.00

This medium mug features a flying bird holding an olive branch in its beak. The bird is inspired by drawings on an ancient roman vessel in the Met  Museum. The inside is a rich copper blue/turquoise.

About 3.5 inches high (9cm), the medium mugs hold around 12 ounces (350ml).

I throw these mugs on the potters wheel and pull the handles. Then  I paint the outside with underglazes and etch/carve/scratch through with a variety of tools to add the details (this is called sgraffito). After a first (bisque) firing,  the mug is glazed inside with a colored glaze, and outside with a satin clear.

You may wash them by hand or in the dishwasher.  If you drink a lot of tea, like I do, the inside will stain over time--but this is easily removed with an abrasive scrubbing (I use those dark green scouring pads commonly found in the grocery store--we call them "green scrubbies").
