small square dishes

These little squares are slab formed in porcelain, painted with underglaze and detailed with sgraffito. We love them for soy sauce, olive oil, a few olives, a place to rest a tea bag, or somewhere to keep a ring at night. Each one is just over three inches, and about a half inch deep-- and they stack well in the cabinet.

I make these dishes by rolling and cutting slabs of porcelain, then pressing them on wooden molds I cut. After they dry a bit, I trim the edges with a wood-working tool and sponge them smooth. I paint them with underglazes when they are bone-dry, then fire them, coat them in clear glaze and give them one last trip through the kiln.

They are safe for food, and fine to put in the dishwasher.
